Getting Started: Your First Geocaching Adventure
Follow these basic steps to join the world’s largest treasure hunt and start your geocaching journey today.
1 Set Up an Account
Let’s start by visiting the website https://www.geocaching.com
to sign up. It’s a good idea to choose a nickname that’s easy to pronounce, as geocachers often address each other that way. You can choose a basic or premium (paid) account.
2 Look for Caches
Once the geocaching map appears, click on the desired cache icon. The cache description will provide coordinates that will be used to navigate to its location. You can use the “Additional Hint” or “Spoiler” (if available).
3 Sign and Trade
In the cache, you’ll need to find the logbook where you enter your nickname. If there are woodcoins in the cache, you can take them, but replace them with an equal number of other woodcoins. After carefully closing the cache, leave it exactly where you found it.
4 Hide Your Own
It’s a good idea to only set your first cache after finding at least 100-200. Start by finding a suitable spot in the terrain where a cache might be hidden. Use your GPS or smartphone to read the coordinates.
5 Explore Cache Types & Events
As you gain experience, you will discover that geocaching goes beyond simple containers. Start exploring Traditional Caches, Multi-Caches, and Mystery Caches, or join the community in a CITO (Cache In Trash Out) event to help clean up the environment.
The Power of Geocaching
Discover how we use this global treasure-hunting game as an innovative tool for non-formal education.

Active Outdoor Exploration
Geocaching transforms traditional walks into exciting adventures. It motivates youth and communities to step outside, engage in healthy physical activity, and explore local parks, trails, and cultural landmarks in a fun, gamified way.

Digital literacy & Teamwork
By using GPS technology, coordinates, and mapping applications, participants develop essential digital navigation skills. The challenges and puzzles hidden in the caches also promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration among peers.
Environmental Awareness
We proudly promote the “Cache In, Trash Out” (CITO) philosophy. Players learn to respect and protect natural habitats, understand local ecosystems, and actively participate in keeping our public spaces clean while enjoying the game.
Common Questions & Answers
Explore answers to popular questions about geocaching to help you get started and enjoy this worldwide adventure.
How do I start my first geocach hunt?

What should I bring on a geocaching trip?
Carry a GPS device or smartphone, pens, small trade items, water, and appropriate outdoor gear.
Are geocaches safe to find?

What rules should I follow when geocaching?
Respect the environment, follow local laws, and always practice ‘Cache In, Trash Out’ to keep nature clean.
Safety Tips
Plan Before You Go
Always check the weather forecast and the cache’s terrain difficulty rating before heading out. Let a friend or family member know your planned route and expected return time.
Pack the Essentials
Bring plenty of water, snacks, a fully charged smartphone or GPS device, and a portable power bank. Don’t forget a first-aid kit for longer hikes and a pen to sign the logbook!
Dress for the Adventure
Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes suitable for uneven terrain. Consider wearing long pants to protect your legs from scratches, thorny bushes, and insects like ticks.
Mind Your Surroundings (Look, Don’t Reach)
Stay aware of your environment and respect local wildlife. Never reach blindly into dark holes, tree hollows, or crevices—use a flashlight or poke around with a stick first!
Know Your Limits
No geocache is worth risking your personal safety. If a hide requires dangerous climbing or feels unsafe to access, it’s completely okay to walk away and try another cache.
Urban Stealth & Safety
When hunting in cities, be mindful of traffic and busy streets. Act naturally to avoid looking suspicious to non-players (muggles), and always respect private property.
